Metal Sculpture Education Comes To Charlotte
Nationally recognized sculpture artist, Bill Hickman will visit Charlotte's
Art In The Dairy in late January, to teach an intense
two day class in Welded Steel Sculpture, followed by a reception and exhibit of
his students' creations at Java Passage Cafe' in SouthEnd's Gallery District
during February's Gallery Crawl on February second, from 6-9PM.
Bill creates masks, animals, and people from 20 gauge cold rolled sheet steel.
His approach is somewhat crude. Metal pieces are torch cut and shaped by
hammering, bending, and rolling. These parts are then gas welded together into
forms, each with unique characteristics, resulting from the heat and hand work.
Bill often uses scrap objects such as saw blades, barbed wire, and nails to
further detail his work.
In this two day class, January 27th & 28th, students will gain experience using
acetylene and plasma torches, to create two masks made of steel, and other
metals. Tuition for this rare opportunity is $325.00, which includes all

Rose Hawley opened Art In The Dairy earlier this year
to further the education and production of fine glass and related art in the
Charlotte, North Carolina area. Black's Dairy was
built on the outskirts of Charlotte in 1940 for the processing and home delivery
of fresh milk, and other dairy products. Today, it serves as the local home for
glass art and glass related education in the Charlotte, North Carolina area. To
